Embedded GNU/Linux and Real-Time - An executive summary

Thursday, March 4th 2010/09:30-10:15

Congress Center Nürnberg (CCN), Germany

After a short definition of what I believe is real-time we´ll see how to add this functionality to a plain vanilla Linux kernel. Two fundamentally different approaches have been applied so far to achieve this. One approach attempts to patch the vanilla Linux kernel to achieve real-time functionality, while the second approach utilizes a dual kernel architecture, where Linux runs as the idle process on top of the real-time kernel. How do performance, implementation effort and licensing compare? Which commercial and open source solutions are available? What are the caveats when you migrate from a RTOS to real-time Linux? What will the future bring?

Here is the paper which accompanies the class.
